Blackening steel – uniform surfaces via black oxide

Blackening—also known as black oxide or bluing—is a proven surface finishing method for steel. Controlled oxidation creates a fine, dark protective layer that is both decorative and corrosion-inhibiting. At WF Mechanik, blackening is integrated into our end-to-end production solutions—efficient, controlled, and reproducible.

Bluing for design and function

The dark surface gives steel components a premium, refined look—ideal for architecture, mechanical engineering, and equipment cladding. The thin oxide layer does not affect dimensional accuracy and pairs well with downstream steps such as polishing, oiling, or assembly. Blackened steel parts absorb light, reduce reflections, and appear particularly uniform—perfect for visible components.

How bluing works

Bluing forms a ~1–2 μm magnetite layer (Fe₃O₄) on steel and iron alloys. Combined with final oil impregnation, it provides reliable baseline corrosion protection and an attractive black appearance. Stainless steel and aluminum cannot be blued, but can be blackened using specialized alternative processes. For best results, all parts are thoroughly degreased and pretreated before blackening. Optional salt-spray testing and layer homogeneity measurements are available.

Your advantages with WF Mechanik

Blackening at WF Mechanik is more than a finishing step—it’s part of a continuous production chain. We account for black oxide requirements as early as component manufacturing to achieve optimal results.

With in-house CNC machining, welding, cleaning, and blackening, you receive perfectly prepared, uniformly finished steel parts—without extra interfaces. That shortens lead times, increases process reliability, and makes both small and large series economically attractive.

Contract manufacturing with added value and precision

All our manufacturing methods are part of an integrated contract manufacturing offer.
WF Mechanik customers benefit from short response times, high flexibility, and the ability to calculate, configure, and order sheet metal parts online.
Both products and services come directly from us — everything from a single source.

Process reliability & documentation – certified to iso 9001

All components are tested using ISO 9001-certified measurement processes, ensuring dimensional accuracy and process stability — especially for safety-critical or assembly-relevant components in mechanical engineering, medical technology, and plant construction.
